Mathematics is an important subject for students to study because it has direct and valuable applications for students in many areas of life. These range from the basic level of dealing with money, to the solution of complicated problems in modern technology.

Mathematics also makes a significant contribution to a student’s education by developing a wide range of skills which can be applied across the curriculum. These skills include the ability to think logically, to analyse complex situations, to solve problems, to explain and predict with some level of certainty and to communicate clearly.

As a department we are committed to the philosophy that during the five core years, each student should:

  • Have a positive experience of learning Mathematics. The ability of pupils and their desire to study Mathematics does vary greatly but we pride ourselves on achieving the very best results for every pupil. This subject is certainly challenging for some but we try very hard to ensure that it is enjoyable for all.
  • Show continuous progression and improvement.
  • Achieve their full potential.

 In particular, we wish each student to develop:

  • A genuine feeling of how numbers fit together; the ability to carry out calculations; understand the significance of results and estimate whether or not an answer is reasonable.
  • The ability to confidently apply Mathematics in everyday situations and develop an understanding of the part which Maths plays in the world.
  • The ability to apply Maths to other subjects across the curriculum.
  • The ability to solve problems, present solutions clearly, check and interpret results.
  • The ability to communicate what they have learned clearly, both in written form and orally.
  • The ability to read, write and talk about Mathematics in a variety of ways.
  • The ability to work individually and as part of a group.
  • The confidence to experiment and make mistakes and persevere when problems arise.
  • A foundation in the subject which will allow them to go on to study Mathematics at A level.
  • A feeling of progress and success in the subject throughout their school life.

We are very proud that all the teachers in the faculty are specialist Maths teachers. We have 7 specialist maths classrooms and a small designated computer room to enhance the learning in the classroom.

The Mathematics Faculty are committed to pushing students towards fulfilling their potential, irrespective of their starting point. We believe that students should be encouraged to learn not just mathematical content, but the full range of skills required in order to apply this when solving problems. We plan all our lesson activities to engage students with the subject, and to build confidence.

KS3 and KS4

Students are taught in ability groups and follow a staged pathway over their first 5 years that works on their stage of learning rather than age so that all can make the progress they need at the required level building confidence and fluency.

In Year 11 the students take the AQA GCSE examinations. This comprises of three papers, one of which is non-calculator, of one and a half hours each. The results are given on the 9-1 grading system. We enter students for either Higher (9-4) or Foundation (5-1) tier, the decision on tier of entry is finally taken in March of Year 11.

KS5

A large proportion of the 6th Form study Mathematics in one form or another and the vast majority of those find that their Mathematics result has a direct bearing on their successful application to university. In recent years several of our very best mathematicians have gone on to study the subject further at the very best universities and a number of others have used their mathematics to help them gain entry onto other sort after courses. We are very proud of our excellent sixth form results and the hard work of our students.

We offer A levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Accountancy and also Level 3 Core Mathematics which is worth half an A level. Students who need to improve their GCSE grade will also have specialist teaching in the sixth form. Currently we use the AQA examinations and are expecting to continue with AQA when the new A levels starts in September 2017.

Enrichment

Our top third of students in all year groups plus all our sixth form students have the opportunity to take part in the UK Maths Challenge. This is a national Mathematics competition aimed at the top third of the ability range. We have had many successes at all levels with several pupils each year being asked to take part in further competitions by the invitation of the organisers. These competitions give the very best students the chance to shine and if you can achieve at this level, you really can describe yourself as a mathematician! We also enter into the Maths challenge Team competitions at all age groups and have achieved good positions over the last few years.

Our students in Year 10, 11 and sixth form have the opportunity to attend a variety of lectures at top universities or given by top Mathematicians over the course of the year. Our Accountancy students enter annually a national BASE competition and have been placed each year with excellent feedback. Our top students in Year 8 have the opportunity to attend a series of Master Classes at Worcester University which take place on Saturday mornings.

We have a maths club open to all students that runs one evening a week for students to work on various aspects of maths either within the curriculum or extra to it.

Our sixth form students have the opportunity to tutor individuals or act as a classroom TA for younger students in a salaried position. This helps them to develop many personal skills while offering invaluable support to others and passing on their enjoyment of the subject.
