WORKING AT JMHS

Thank you for your interest in working at John Masefield High School.  JMHS is a school where excellent and enjoyable learning, in a supportive community, enables everybody to achieve their best.

Students achieve well at JMHS and we are proud of their outcomes.  Our average GCSE grades and pass rates are consistently above the national average, and last year’s cohort of Sixth Formers made better-than-expected progress in both A-level and vocational qualifications.  This strong progress is built upon our firm conviction that all of our children will learn and flourish, coupled with exceptional teaching.

We are no less proud of the extracurricular achievements of our students.  Students here thrive on the breadth of opportunities available, and on the care and connection they experience within our community.  Whether their passion is for sport, music, drama, the arts, games, or academic pursuits, children in this community will find something to enrich their school experience.  This means that they leave us with happy memories, and a well-rounded character.  For us, this is as important as their leaving us with excellent grades and qualifications.

Staff also learn and thrive in our community, and we place great importance on supporting adults to flourish in the same way as children.  All staff benefit from excellent professional development, and all staff are able to choose from a menu of activities to best meet their needs.   At the core of our professional development is collaboration and collegiality: we know that the best way to get better is to give teams of professionals time and space to discuss and reflect together on the best approach for their specific subject or area.

John Masefield wrote that ‘the days that make us happy make us wise’.   We agree, and we pride ourselves on being a happy community, where adults and children grow wiser together.   I am reminded every day when I talk to our children, their families, and my colleagues how fortunate and privileged I am to be part of John Masefield High School.

We welcome visits from all prospective applicants, and I hope you are able to join us and see this community for yourself.  We look forward to welcoming you.

John Holmes, Headteacher
