Student Wellbeing

Student wellbeing is a central priority at John Masefield High School, and we are committed to supporting the emotional, social and mental health needs of all our students. We believe that students learn best when they feel safe, supported and valued, and we work closely with pupils and families to ensure help is available whenever it is needed.

Every student sees their form tutor each morning, making the tutor their first port of call for daily support, guidance and any concerns they may have. This regular contact helps build strong, trusting relationships and ensures students are settled and ready for the day ahead. In addition, Year Leaders and members of the Senior Leadership Team regularly circulate tutor groups and assemblies each morning, providing visible support, checking in with students and ensuring a calm and positive start to the school day.

A wide range of staff are available as key contacts for wellbeing support, including form tutors, Heads of Year, Student Support Assistants and the safeguarding team. Students are encouraged to speak to any trusted adult in school if they have concerns, and parents and carers are welcome to contact the school to discuss support at any time.

Form Tutor and Year Leader Support

Form Tutors take a holistic approach to supporting students, offering guidance with their studies, organisation and pastoral wellbeing. They build strong relationships with students and are well placed to notice any concerns at an early stage. If there is an issue you wish to discuss with the school, we encourage parents and carers to contact their child’s Form Tutor in the first instance via email.

Year Leaders oversee the work of Form Tutors and are responsible for setting high standards across their year group. They support students with more complex pastoral, attendance or behavioural matters and work closely with parents and carers where more serious issues arise.
