  • Transitioning from Year 11 to Sixth Form

    JM6 Transition programme

Making the step up to Sixth Form couldn’t be easier than at JM6.

It’s going to be different from what you’re used to, with more challenging work, greater freedom and increased responsibility.

That is why we provide students with a dedicated transition programme, so that their Sixth Form journey is supported both academically and personally.

To ensure you thrive and achieve your potential, you can expect:

    • A taster day and futures interviews, to ensure you are applying for suitable courses to maximise your success
    • An Induction Day in June where you can meet your peers and subject teachers whilst learning a bit more about your chosen courses
    • Summer transition work to lay the foundations for A Level and BTEC study
    • Enrolment support on GCSE results day and on enrolment day
    • A dedicated day at the start of the academic year, which is Year 7 and Sixth Form only
    • Access to a dedicated Learning Mentor and pastoral support from the Sixth Form Leadership Team
    • A thorough study skills program to kick start Year 12 and beyond
Year 10 – Next Steps Day

Students begin considering their post-16 pathways in Year 10. To support this process, we host a dedicated Next Steps Day each July, designed to help students focus on their future choices.

On this day, all Year 10 students can select from a range of activities, which vary annually. These typically include opportunities to experience a series of A Level and vocational Level 3 lessons. The programme is carefully structured to give students insight into different styles of learning, including participation in small, focused groups—an important aspect of our Sixth Form study.

For the duration of the day, students will be treated as members of the Sixth Form. Outside of lesson times, they will have the opportunity to explore and make use of Sixth Form facilities, including the kitchen, study areas, and common room.

    JM6 Transition Day

The JM6 Transition Day for Year 11 students takes place during the summer term and is designed to provide a strong foundation as students move from GCSE study to the increased academic demands of A Level and Level 3 courses.

The programme focuses on consolidating existing knowledge while developing the core skills required for success in each student’s chosen Sixth Form subjects. It also offers valuable flexibility for those who are still considering their options, allowing additional time to experience and explore subjects before making final decisions.

In addition to academic preparation, the day provides an opportunity for students to meet their new peers and engage in a range of team-building activities, helping to foster a sense of community within the year group.
