Summer Concert

The evening sun out on the patio on Thursday 14th July was a beautiful setting for our annual Summer Concert – the first live concert JMHS students have been part of since Christmas 2019! Mr Oaten’s Y9 Food team provided delicious canapes for the audience to enjoy before the concert began. For current Y7 and 8 students, this was the first time they had performed for a live audience since being at JMHS, and they took it in their stride. There was huge variety in the musical items, and lots of students brought solo items as well, demonstrating not just their talent but incredible confidence!

The evening opened with the  orchestra performing a medley of Elton John songs. Highlights from the school ensembles included Y7 Singers performing ‘When I Grow Up’ from Tim Minchin’s Matilda, Men’s Voices performing hits from Green Day and Kodaline, and the Charlie Parker classic ‘Yardbird Suite’ from the Jazz Band. Jazz Band were very lucky to welcome back ex-JMHS students Lucy and George, who missed out on their Y13 Leavers Concert due to the pandemic. There were some exceptional solo items from students of all ages – Nathaniel (Y7) performed a solo piano piece, while Y10 students Theresa, Alice, Joe, Emily and Vaughan brought a variety of items including the Beatles hit ‘Come Together’, ‘A Million Dreams’ from The Greatest Showman and an extract from the Pink Floyd masterpiece ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’.

It was great to welcome back some of our Y11 and Y13 Leavers – Izzy, Angelina, Jamie, Tom, Sophia and Katy, to join the orchestra. Y11 Leaver Angelina performed an original song she had written, and Y13 Leaver Katy gave a beautiful performance of the Corinne Bailey Rae song ‘Put Your Records On’. The Y10 band (Vaughan, Joe, Keilan and Sam) blew the metaphorical roof off with a raucous rendition of Paranoid by Black Sabbath. The evening closed with the choir performing a Scottish traditional song ‘The Parting Glass’ – traditionally sung at the end of an evening or gathering      between friends. The orchestra then brought the house down with a rousing medley of songs from The Phantom of the Opera. Thank you to all of the students for working so hard in rehearsals this year, and a big thank you to our Y11 and 13 Leavers for joining us for one last time. Miss Davis would also like to extend a thank you to Mrs Grubb for running Jazz Band, Mr Rodgers for his support with Men’s Voices, and Mrs Kyle, Mrs Goodall and Mr Mowbray for ensuring the concert ran smoothly.
