The HSFA organises a series of cup competitions for schools from across the county to compete in. The finals of these competitions take place in Hereford at the Edgar Street Stadium, the home of Hereford FC. This is an incredible opportunity for students to represent their school on a big stage! We had 3 year groups representing JMHS and all three teams played with great sportsmanship and skill.

Y8 FINALISTS
The Y8 boys (who were also finalists in Y7) narrowly lost a competitive game to St Marys’ High School in the Y 8 cup final. JMHS opened the scoring as the impressive Archie Horton’s miscued shot made its way under the diving body of the St Marys’ goal keeper. There was very little to pick between the teams, and both had some good chances to score. JMHS then went two goals up when Mikyle Naicker scored before half time. There was time for St Marys’ to get on the score sheet before half time when they scored a penalty, meaning that at the break it was 2-1 to JMHS. The next goal was going to be crucial and with another error from their keeper, we scored again making the score 3-1 with another goal from Mikyle. We battled hard for the remainder of the game, but St Marys’ pinched a goal and then had the momentum to score an equaliser. So to penalties!! Ben Walton made a great save and Archie Horton calmly slotted his penalty home, but it went downhill from there with the St Marys’ keeper pulling out some remarkable saves and St Marys’ clinched the title 3 penalties to 1. Well done to all who played in the final and throughout the season. You have all done JMHS proud.

Y9 COUNTY CHAMPIONS!!
After losing a very close final to Whitecross in Y8, the boys have shown a determination all season to win back the trophy they won in Y7. After winning every group game and the semi-final, the boys arrived at the final with confidence. All season they have played an attacking and composed brand of football. In the final this proved too much for Wigmore and after a close opening ten minutes an excellent finish from Ollie Davies was the start of a period of dominance. Further goals were scored by Josh Phillips (2), Ryan Halford (4), Charlie Cresswell and an own goal. A resounding 9-0 win was just reward for an excellent season and we look forward to defending the trophy next year!

Y11 FINALISTS
The Y11 boys lost a highly competitive and physical match to John Kyrle High School in the Y11 cup final. John Kyrle opened the scoring after 20 minutes but JMHS were pilling on the pressure with several shots on target. A questionable penalty was awarded to JKHS at the start of the second half giving them a 2-0 lead but JMHS were then awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area. Toby Raison’s perfectly executed free kick brought JMHS back into the game at 2-1. The next goal was going to be crucial but unfortunately it was JKHS who scored with 10 minutes to play. JMHS gave it their all but at the final whistle it was JKHS who were crowned champions 3-1. The boys gave it their all and have played superbly throughout the season and really have made JMHS proud.

As Head of PE, I am very proud of all the students that have represented us in the recent football County finals. Reaching three finals is quite an achievement. Moreover, I am very proud of the breadth and depth of extra curricular opportunities that we are able to give to students at JMHS. However, the transport costs required to support this are increasing and are becoming more and more difficult to finance. It costs between £130 – £150 every time we take a team(s) to an away fixture. Therefore, we are looking for ways to minimise this cost as opposed to sacrificing sporting opportunities. Thus far, I have asked for parental contributions, we are using Community Action Ledbury (CAL) buses where we can (at no cost) and are putting JMHS sports transport out to tender. If you are able to offer any support with the cost of transport to sports fixtures either financially or in any other way, please do not hesitate to get in touch as I would love to hear from you.
