We are delighted to report that three students from John Masefield Sixth Form have received offers from Oxford and Cambridge; Head Girl, Beth Hiley – Medicine at St Hughs, Oxford; Isaac George – Engineering at St Johns, Oxford; Max Davis – Mathematics – Sidney Sussex, Cambridge. Mr Hawksworth, Head of Sixth Form said: “All three students have worked extremely hard and deserve their success on courses which are incredibly competitive; they are an inspiration to other students from small rural communities that it is possible to aspire for places in the top universities”. To help the students prepare, Oxbridge applicants are supported by experienced staff at John Masefield Sixth Form with their application and arranging practise interviews. For the mock interviews, the school is fortunate to be able to call on a wealth of experience from JMHS Governors, staff at QinetiQ and members of the Rotary Club to make the experience as relevant as possible for the students and we are extremely grateful for their invaluable help. In addition, students also regularly attend masterclasses with students from other local colleges through the HE+ initiative which is run by Cambridge University and Beth also attended the Oxford Target Schools programme, which runs an annual shadowing scheme for over 200 Year 12 students from the UK, where she attended lectures and shadowed current undergraduate students.
We are pleased to report that each year a high number of our students apply to Russell Group universities and this year is no exception with many already receiving offers or awaiting decisions. Courses applied for are some of the most competitive, including Mathematics, Law, Radiography, Physiotherapy, Geography, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, English Literature, German & Spanish, Psychology and International Relations. Mr Hawksworth added: “We are incredibly fortunate to have a dedicated team of Teaching staff and Tutors who work hard to support students to ensure they achieve their potential and we wish all our students every success with their summer exams and future plans”.
