The Royal Aeronautical Society’s branch at Boscombe Down celebrated its 150th anniversary by organising a balloon competition for schools at the end of last year. After initially registering their interest in participating and meeting some of the team from Boscombe Down, the Sixth Form team regrettably had to take the difficult decision not to participate due to a number of factors which were outside of their control.
However, by now the Boscombe Down team had heard about Y13 Ryan Ing’s EPQ balloon flight which was launched last September and were so impressed they decided to invite him anyway to the prize giving event which was held on 10 February.
Accompanied by Mr Henderson, the school’s ICT Manager, Ryan went to Boscombe Down where he gave a presentation on his flight to a highly distinguished audience including President of the RAS, and the founder of Cameron Balloons.
Mr Henderson said “the presentation was very well received and after lunch we were invited by the Branch Chairwoman, to see the Meteorological Office station where Ryan gained an invaluable insight into the work of a Meteorologist and a tour of the site. All-in-all a fascinating and enjoyable day.”
